President Trump:

While social distancing measures continue to slow the spread of coronavirus, the full economic costs of the pandemic are only beginning to be realized. As we all learned in 2008, the housing market is the most likely point of failure in the US economy, and unless action is taken swiftly to protect American renters and homeowners, a chain reaction of events may lead to widespread default, currency destabilization, and the next Great Depression. Or maybe not. We must recognize the warning signs and lead proactively to spare the livelihoods of millions of Americans.

Housing cost is the greatest financial burden that the vast majority of lower and middle-class citizens face. Temporarily removing that burden would immediately stimulate the economy, as money otherwise spent on housing would be spent to cover necessities and even permit some much needed relief in this unsettling time. It is not sufficient to establish a grace period for paying late, nor is it necessary to reduce total mortgage cost. Any suspended mortgage payments should be added to the end of the loan term. Renters, however, should not need to repay rent for the duration of the crisis. Millions of Americans would undoubtedly thank you with their vote in November.

It is time that the banking system start paying back the 2008 stimulus money to American taxpayers when we need it most. While most of us opposed the bailout, we were told it was absolutely necessary to ensure the health of the economy and to maintain our way of life. Now we are heading toward a similar predicament, and to no fault of our own. A suspension of payments on rents, mortgages, utilities, and property taxes during the coronavirus crisis would benefit your campaign for reelection as well as hundreds of millions of American citizens you’ve pledged to serve.
