Current Situation

As of now there are over 3 million Uighurs in Chinese detainment camps

Solution

Ask the U.S. government to consider imposing sanctions on the Chinese officials most responsible for the government's policies on Uighurs under the provision of Global Magnitsky Act (Since 2016 the bill, which applies globally, authorizes the US government to sanction those who it sees as human rights offenders, freeze their assets, and ban them from entering the U.S.) and that the U.S. ambassador to the U.N. brings up global sanctions against China.

History

Since April of 2017 Uighurs and other minorities in the Xinjiang region have been put in mass detention camps as part of the “People's War on Terror” which was announced in 2014. Most believe that this was influenced by Uighur protests and riots that took place in 2009 and led to hundreds of causualties. And also seperate acts of terrorism that have taken place outside the province of Xinjiang which has allowed Bejing to justify heavy restrictions on the group. Inmates of these camps usually haven’t committed any crimes and are incarcerated without a trial. In these supposed ‘re-education camps’ detainees are forced to eat pork, drink alcohol, and renounce Islam in favor of the Communist Peoples party. While most of these people are recorded to have ‘voluntarily came to the camps’ detainees that have been released have told a different story. Many detainees have said that they were beaten in the camps and one once stated that they were hit with electric batons. These camps have come under international condemnation from over 22 countries, however this is not enough to deter China. And despite China’s claims to have released the detained Uighurs, experts have found no evidence backing this claim. Something needs to be done and soon because an entire ethnic identity could be erased. This is because while China is taking adult Uighurs to the camps their children are going to re-education camps as well in which their identity is erased and replaced with the only identity the Chinese government wants them to know, Chinese.

My Motivation

I am Ziad Burghli and I am a student and Muslim in the U.S. and I started this petition because the Uighur crisis really moved me and I felt that something had to be done. It just isn’t right that 3 million Uighurs are in concentration camps when their only crime is practicing their religion. Something has to be done and soon because an entire ethnicity could soon be erased in the modern day world.
