As many know, the U.S. Government is rolling out a new stimulus bill accounting for 2.2 trillion dollars directed to Americans to cope with the financial crisis brought by COVID-19. Each American who qualifies can get up to $1200. Every additional child in a household is allocated $500. This excludes children’s young adults age 16 to 18. I, as a 17 year old high school senior with a job as well as near financial independence, fall into this ignored demographic. I’m calling on change to bring attention and awareness to this left out group of students and adolescents who fall into this uncertain situation. I’m pleading to my representative in Congress Jaime Herrera Beutler so that this group is not ignored and ask she proposes in Congress a stimulus bill allocated to those 16-18 who have filed their taxes for the year 2019. Even if it is less than say $1200. Anything is better than nothing. This demographic is struggling to assert themselves in society during these times as many small business that would typically hire minors are going through financial hardship and can’t afford to pay workers, let alone be open for business. This makes it hard to support those whose parents have little ability to support them. You can find more information on this issue in paragraph 13 of this article by The Washington Post.
