“Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a crime whereof the party is duly convicted...” This sentence is one of the many reasons for the mass incarceration of people of color. I propose we rewrite the 13th Amendment to completely il-legalize slavery. As of right now, police are able to arrest people of color for petty reasons, and the persecution is able to use peremptory strikes to remove people of color or people who wouldn’t have bias from the jury, which violates the constitutional right of a fair trial. The innocent person is able to be arrested for nothing or something ridiculous and they can’t get a fair trial, and then they are forced into slavery, their voting rights are taken away, and they are legally able to be beaten by prison guards and put into solitary for no reason. Slavery hasn’t been eradicated. By signing this petition, you are helping it become so.
