During this time of eruption of protests for systematic injustice across the NATION, politicians are asking citizens to take part in local elections to help “make change”. On May 30, 2020 citizens in Orangeburg, SC stood up and spoke out at a peaceful protest downtown in the administration division of the city. Orangeburg, SC has approximately 97,000 residents. 57,000 are REGISTERED to vote.....only 10,000 ACTUALLY vote and are typically 45 and older. Leaving major decisions to an older demographic within a city full of colleges and young people. The biggest issue with this is that 74% of Orangeburg county is African American and a large percentage of the residents are felons....meaning they no longer have a right to vote. We are petitioning to change that. If we want real change and for voices to be truly heard, we HAVE TO REINSTATE THEIR VOICE! This petition is to push that agenda forward and work with our state to create a system or program that felons can enroll in after being released from incarceration to have their rights restored(voting rights, government assistance, etc). Many people of our young black people are locked up at a young age and never get a chance to redeem themselves because their background makes the decision for them. LET’S MAKE A CHANGE SOUTH CAROLINA AND IT STARTS HERE!
