Marijuana is a drug that has been long banned and illegal but why? If we compare marijuana to another dangerous and addictive substance like alcohol, that is not banned, the reasons to ban marijuana are insufficient. Also legalizing marijuana could bring more jobs to farmers and increase the consumers awareness for the affects of marijuana (“Marijuana Legalization and Regulation”).

According to the center for disease control, there have been 88,000 deaths linked to alcohol use but there are very little deaths linked to marijuana use (Brownstein, 2014). Both marijuana and alcohol have short- and long-term effects to a human body. They both impair balance and coordination which can make it dangerous for someone to drive or work. Marijuana should be legal just like alcohol.

If marijuana were legalized it could be grown and sold legally. This would provide farmers and others with job opportunities (“Marijuana Legalization and Regulation”). If marijuana is sold legally then the age at which you can have marijuana can be regulated. Only people 21 years of age and older could buy marijuana making it harder for the younger ages to get marijuana.

If marijuana were legalized it would save money. 693,482 marijuana arrest were made in the U.S. in 2013 (Drug Policy Alliance, 2016). All these arrests had to have a court session that the government has to pay for. Also, taxpayer’s money is going towards incarcerations. With marijuana being legalized more money would be saved and tax money could be spent on other things like education.

We care about these issues because they affect how our tax money is spent, what jobs are available to us and others, and it helps to answer the question on why alcohol is legal, and marijuana is not. If tax money was not spent on incarcerations, there would be more money going to the public schools in our community and teachers would be able to have more resources to teach our future generations. If marijuana is legalized more jobs will be opened to the jobless and the younger generations would not have access to marijuana. This is important because the effects of marijuana on a younger person are more serious than the affects on an adult. Lastly, legalizing marijuana would only make sense because alcohol is legal, and alcohol has almost the same side effects as marijuana. We need to understand and recognize the pros of legalizing marijuana and help to make the change.
