Problem
Puerto Rico loses power lines almost every hurricane season. In 2017, Puerto Rico lost power for months. The citizens of Puerto Rico need a way to have reliable power throughout the year.

Solution
The solution to this issue is to create a compartmentalized system of above and below-ground power lines. The estimated cost for this project would be approximately 50+ billion dollars. The cost for this project is large, but it would eliminate the cost to replace power lines every hurricane season.

Personal story
Over the years, Puerto Rico has been hit by multiple major hurricanes. These hurricanes have caused major damage to the island’s infrastructure, especially the power lines. When Erica Peterson, an experienced AmeriCorps member, visited Puerto Rico, she experienced the terrible conditions that the lack of power lines caused.

“...even when I was there 5 months after Maria hit, most of the power lines were still down,” Erica told our team.
“[This was true] especially in the places outside of San Juan and the places up in the mountains, because they were harder to reach. A lot of the times they were hanging in the streets or in people’s yards. One time I saw some kids playing volley ball over a power line in their street. When they started fixing them, they just put up new power lines and didn’t clean up the old ones. In the places that got power back, it would still go out every now and then.”
