Epilepsy is a silent and stigmatized illness - one that will touch each and every one of our lives

3.4 million American's currently live with epilepsy and that number is on the rise. 1 in 26 people will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime, which means that everyone knows someone with epilepsy. Yet, epilepsy is rarely talked about and often stigmatized and shunned. People with epilepsy, especially kids, hide their epilepsy from their peers, classmates, teachers, and coaches for fear of being treated differently. We can't blame them - up until the 1970s people with epilepsy were regularly denied access to public places such as restaurants, theaters, and some states wouldn't even allow them to get married. Even today, over 50% of American teenagers admitted in a 2017 study that they wouldn't date someone with epilepsy.

We are isolating millions of people in America for something that is out of their control and it needs to stop!

My name is Mariah and I have lived with epilepsy for 12 years...almost my whole childhood. I kept my epilepsy a secret for 10 long years because I didn't want to be treated any differently in school. I felt out of place and like my illness made me not as good as my peers.

Two years ago, I learned about how kids and teens with epilepsy often suffer from mental illness due to feeling isolated and alone and attempting to keep such a big part of themselves hidden. So, I decided to start speaking out to break down the stigma!

March 26th is National Purple Day for Epilepsy Awareness. I want to light up the White House Purple on that day to show 3.4 million Americans that they are not alone! The White House has been lite up in the past for Breast Cancer Awareness, Autism Awareness, and celebrating LGBTQ+ rights...will you please join me in asking our president to light it up purple this March for epilepsy?
