The statistics for juveniles in the detention centers with a diagnosable or already diagnosed mental health disorder is alarmingly disturbing. What’s even more alarming is the lack of access to services and treatment. Although mental health has come a long way over the last 30 years, it still has a long way to go. Our children depend on us to take a stand and be their voice and my son is one of them.

This is not about right or wrong, guilt or innocence. This is about standing up for a change and standing up for our kids, they need us! It’s about time our country stops the stigma on mental health, start catching it younger and start bringing awareness so they don’t end up in the system. There needs to be resources available for these kids, families, schools, communities and detention centers. Keeping them locked up is only making them worse when they are already in prison in their minds.

My son has been in the juvenile detention center since January 25, 2019 and has been denied access to mental health services. He has completed a level 3 psyche evaluation and has not 1 but 4 diagnosis along with a recent hypothyroidism diagnosis.

His level 3 psyche eval goes into great detail about him needing services and why and also states that with therapy he is rehabilitatable. It also states he doesn’t show signs of being a sociopath or developing those behaviors. He just needs help with therapy, medication and services. Isn’t that the point? Don’t we want to rehabilitate our youth?

I battled an extreme illness which included 23 hip surgeries and sepsis. He watched me suffer, not knowing if was going to live or not, for nearly 3 years. He had multiple suicide attempts, one in which he was taken from school, and still no one listened or wanted to help him or my family. Now he is in the system and they are failing him like so many others.

My son needs help. He can and will be a good citizen in society if given the tools to succeed. So many others kids need help too. This is a national epidemic and we need to be the change for our youth. They are our future!
