Jai'Quan Gunter started this petition to President Donald J. Trump and

Over the past couple of years, the number of arrest has significantly increased in the U.S. Majority of them were drug related arrest for the possession of a drug. I have witnessed people who have never been incarcerated before or have never committed any wrong doing against the law be punished for the simple possession of marijuana. They are regular citizens just trying to find a pastime to release stress and escape their busy life. Even though its illegal right now, its not right to drop a boat load of charges on them just for something so simple. Everyone doesn't have the luxury of spending money taking big vacations and even the ones who do may still smoke marijuana. We have to look at marijuana as more than just a drug. According to health care sources, smoking marijuana gives a sense of pleasure whereas alcohol impairs the body physically and mentally by slowing down the thought process, distorting balance, and even alters your mood.

Getting a charge as simple as the one for possession of marijuana tends to motivate many people to retaliate in ways unimaginable. Arresting someone for the possession of marijuana does not stop them from smoking it, it only makes them more eager in finding something else to get into that's not good. This is what impacts the our community with violence. I also have witnessed in my own community when some one goes to jail for some kind of affiliation with marijuana and get out and be in all sorts of trouble afterwards. I'm not saying marijuana can stop all the violence happening but, its a step that is worth taking in legalizing it.

Revenue can be earned from legalizing marijuana and be put towards schools and roads. I attend college right now and find it hard to get financial assistance because the price of tuition has risen drastically over the years. More money is spent trying to maintain the operation of prison systems each year than it is spent for any other resources. Some of that money can be used to issue grants and scholarships to students to help them attend. I say grants and scholarships simply because its hard for lower class individuals like myself to pay those back. Some people find it so hard to repay them that they may go to the extent to get money any way they can just to pay them back and they may resort to selling drugs as one of those ways. Also, some of the money can go towards our roads. We commute up and down them daily despite the condition. It puts wear and tear on our cars which requires us to pay out of packet tons of money to get them fixed based on the problem.

All I am saying is, lets push to make marijuana legal. We as Americans already feel as if we are restricted from fully being free because there is some type of limit or boundary prohibiting us from doing what we want. There are more people than expected who have smoked marijuana at least one time in their lives. Which means that most of them have gotten it without a medical prescription. Alcohol is legal, and there are laws attached to it that citizens must follow for safety. Why cant it be the same for marijuana? We can't be afraid of change we have to learn to accept things that can be beneficial to everyone.
