My name is Kandy Perry.  I am posting this petition for my only child Tara Perry. I am going to let her say it in her own words.

Hi my name is Tara Perry.  I have been incarcerated for almost 6 years.  I have a 20- year sentence for a non violent conspiracy to possess and distribute meth.  I am writing to you to plead and beg for help. I have my clemency paper work filed and I know the more attention I call to it, the better chance I have. I did get a 2-point reduction which took me down to 16 years. The reason I am seeking clemency is because a year into my incarceration, my mother who at that time was still using drugs and had my children, lost all of them to CPS.  All 4 of them.  With no other family to take them and me locked up for so long, I had to terminate my rights.  My kids were separated and 3 of them were adopted.  My oldest son who is a problem child is still stuck in the foster care system. He is 10 years old now and I have heard that to date he has been in 10 different foster homes. If I was granted clemency I could fight to get him back.  I could save my son from a life of being bounced around from foster home to foster home.

Since my incarceration, on February 18, 2014, my life has taken a much needed change.  I have always maintained a full time job. I have completed my Nursing Assistant Certificate while working in the hospital, FMC Carswell, taking care of patients. I feel this has helped me establish the necessary skills for job security upon my release.  I am truly thankful for the focus I have and the clarity I have gained throughout my years confined.  It feels good to be trusted and respected. In addition to my jobs, I have developed an interest in the healing process through the Chaplaincy Department.  I enrolled in the Life Connections Program and completed the 18 month course. This faith based program has taught me the importance of recognizing my place in society and has allowed me to develop needed skills to reintegrate into the community. Today I use my God given talent by singing with the worship team. My love for music has been channeled through my voice. I believe serving God is my utmost privilege.

I have moved custody levels and now reside at the Carswell Camp.  I have become involved with the ACCESS Program (Assisting Canine Companions by Enhancing Service Skills.)  We work under Canine Companions for Independence.  I have been in the program for almost 2 years and have progressed from dog walker to full time Dog Handler. The program allows our team to start training at eight weeks, then teaches them their 30 basic commands until approximately 20 months.  At this point the dogs move on to become Skilled Companion, Service, Facility, Hearing, or PTSD dogs. I feel that this program allows me to personally make a positive contribution to society. I am also involved in the "SHARE" Program which stands for Sharing Hope About Recovery Experiences.  We go into the community and share our stories with at risk youth. I believe in community effort and hope that my participation in these meaningful programs is a form of recompense for the past wrongs I have caused.

I am nearing my sixth year in prison and believe I have found direction and purpose for my life. I was a drug addict for many years and I admit to my wrong doings.  I was sentenced as a career offender based on my past crimes.  However, the Supreme Court now recognizes the rules of law that qualified me as a career offender before would not legally apply today. I know what I did was wrong, but I also know that I am a changed woman.  A woman who has a lot to share with the world.  I have become saved since my incarceration and I know that God has a plan for my life.  I just need the chance to show that people can change.  My dream is to share my story with the world and to become a Substance Abuse Counselor all while using my gift for singing to sing about God's Amazing Grace.  Please help me and help me to have a chance to save my son.  I am pleading for your help and mercy.  May God Bless You and Thank You for taking the time to read this.
