Sara Angle started this petition to President Donald J. Trump and

Opha May Johnson was the first female Marine in United States history, having graduated from Parris Island in August of 1918. It has been over a hundred years since females entered the Marine Corps, yet females are still often not given the option to join the infantry.

This is an upsetting fact to many females that have decided to enlist in the USMC. Recruiters and officers almost never give females the option to join the infantry. There are few combat jobs in any of the military branches offered to women, but the numbers from the Marine Corps infantry are staggering.

The United States Marine Corps only have 24 females serving in infantry billets (as of March 2020). Other branches, such as the US Army, have lower numbers because they only recently started allowing women into combat positions. It is time for the USMC to begin offering infantry positions to females.

Even if the want for equality for combat opportunities raises the requirements for females in Marine Corps boot camp, it is best to know that females are given the open option to join into combat positions.

By signing this position, you recognize that females enlisting in the USMC are rarely given the option to serve in the infantry. And, if they are offered, are often brought down by their peers because of the low volume of women in the Marine Corps infantry. Opening up the option would give women the opportunity to join the infantry and join other combat jobs in the United States military.
