The House of Representatives passed its Farm Bill including the dangerous and overreaching "King amendment," which threatens to repeal dozens of animal protection laws. It could nullify not only measures relating to animal welfare—like farm animal confinement, horse slaughter, puppy mills, and shark finning—but a wide range of other concerns including food safety, child labor and the environment.

A House-Senate conference committee will now negotiate the final bill, and we need to keep the King amendment out!

Letter to
U.S. House of Representatives
U.S. Senate
As a constituent concerned about preventing cruelty to animals, I am deeply disappointed that the House of Representatives passed a Farm Bill that includes the dangerous and overreaching "King amendment." This Farm Bill could repeal dozens of state laws relating to animal welfare -- like farm animal confinement, horse slaughter, puppy mills, and shark finning -- and a wide range of other concerns including food safety, child labor and the environment.

The King Amendment language is a sweeping attack on the right of states to protect the health, safety, and welfare of their citizens and local businesses. The provisions of the King amendment are at odds with any talk about the protection of states' rights.

I hope you will do everything you can to help remove the King amendment from the final Farm Bill and oppose this radical attack on animal welfare and states' rights.
