Don't let Hazelwood negotiations fail - replace Australia's dirtiest power station with clean energy

URGENT UPDATE : On Friday 29 June the Energy Minister Martin Ferguson announced that the government would not secure a deal to replace our dirtiest power stations like Hazelwood by the 30 June deadline.

However, the negotiations between the government and power station owners are far from over, and the government is still working toward an outcome.

It’s the actions of thousands of Australians supporting this campaign that have held the government at the negotiating table for this long. So we need to keep up the pressure.

Now, when we’re so close to the finish line, it’s more important than ever to show your support for replacing Hazelwood power station with clean energy. We can’t let this major opportunity slip by.

Please, sign this petition and share it with your friends and family to make sure the key decision makers stick to the plan, and finally, replace Hazelwood.

I'm a mother to a 10 week old boy. Having my first child gives me a renewed sense of how important the future is. I’m worried about climate change, and the impact our pollution will have during his lifetime. I've started this petition because I think it's so important that the Government acts to replace the dirtiest power station in the country with clean energy. It's essential for my baby boy's future.

Now's our chance to get Hazelwood, Australia’s dirtiest power station, replaced with clean energy.

The federal government is currently in negotiations with the owners of Hazelwood and other polluting power stations to replace three of these big polluters. The negotiation deadline is 30 June – just over five weeks away -- but I have just read media reports suggesting that the government might walk away from the negotiation table.

Unless they receive pressure from people across the country, this crucial moment to stop the millions of tonnes of pollution from Hazelwood could be lost.

That’s why I’ve teamed up with Environment Victoria to start this petition.

We’ve got just five weeks to make sure that the government delivers on their commitment to close our dirtiest coal-fired power stations.

The petition is to Ministers and Victorian MPs who we believe are key in ensuring the government sticks to the plan and replaces Hazelwood.

Why is Hazelwood so dirty and dangerous:

It’s old, inefficient, and out-of-date.

Hazelwood is Australia’s dirtiest power station. It’s responsible for almost 15 percent of Victoria’s greenhouse pollution and 3 percent of Australia’s – a whopping 16 million tonnes a year. It uses 27 billion litres of water a year – that’s almost a months worth of Melbourne’s water supply. And it’s the single largest source of dangerous dioxin pollutants in Australia.

Right now, we have a historic opportunity to Replace Hazelwood with clean energy. We can’t let it slip by.

Please sign the petition now.

I just signed the following petition addressed to: Victorian Labor MPs.

Please make the commitment to Replace Hazelwood with Clean Energy

Dear Victorian MPs – Mr. Darren Cheesman, Mr. Mike Symon and Ms. Laura Smyth
CC: Ministers Martin Ferguson, Greg Combet and Parliamentary Secretary Mark Dreyfus QC

I’m concerned about climate change, and the impact that our dirty coal-fired power
stations are having on our environment and health.

That’s why I was glad to hear that your government has committed to replace our
dirtiest power stations. But time to deliver is running out.

Now, I’m calling on your government to deliver on your commitment and announce
a deal to Replace Hazelwood and at least two of our other dirty power stations by 30 June.

I support:
- A deal to replace the full 2000MW of brown-coal fired power stations,
including one large power station like Hazelwood, and two smaller power
stations like Playford in South Australia and Collinsville in Queensland
- The closure of power stations to start by 2014 at the latest
- Support for workers and communities in affected areas and investment in
new industries in these communities
- A transition to a clean renewable energy future for all of Australia
