Decision Maker Response

Tom Mulcair’s response

Sep 22, 2015 — Thank you for signing the petition to stop the elimination of home delivery of mail. An NDP Government will cancel Canada Post's controversial plan and reinstate home delivery in all communities already affected by the cuts announced in December 2013.

For the past year and a half, Canada Post has been implementing a sweeping, five-year plan to end door-to-door mail delivery for 5.1 million Canadian households. When completed, Canada will become the ONLY G7 country without any home mail delivery. We think that is unacceptable, and for the past year and a half, the NDP been the only party consistently standing up for home delivery services for Canadians.

Predictably, the loss of home delivery will have negative consequences for seniors and people living with disabilities. It also means a loss of up to 8,000 jobs. To make matters worse, the decision to install 100,000 super mailboxes in neighbourhoods is raising many concerns about traffic congestion, the privacy of homeowners, more garbage in public spaces and damage to trees and properties. Canadians are also concerned about safety issues such as poor street lighting and inadequate snow removal.

Our fair and sensible plan to reinstate home delivery will modernize Canada Post to generate new revenues instead of cutting services. We will protect home delivery and Canadian taxpayers.

You can count on New Democrats to push for workable solutions. Let's continue to work together to reverse the changes announced by Canada Post.
