The $550 per fortnight Coronavirus Supplement, currently a lifeline for many, is due to be cut to $250 nationwide on 25 September 2020. With metropolitan Melbourne's economy still shut down and no date for a transition to Covid-normal yet in sight, any hope for recipients to transition into paid work when the rate reduces has been wiped away. This will leave vulnerable citizens with a shortfall of $300 per fortnight indefinitely, putting many at risk of serious economic hardship. By Christmas, this amounts to a debt of $1,800 per person which may not just cause great financial distress but exacerbate the mental health crisis, petty crime and homelessness.  Please consider extending the current Coronavirus supplement rates for those residing in metropolitan Melbourne, in light of recent announcements.
