Tony Baller started this petition to Don Iveson and

Elected officials in Edmonton are currently entitled to 2 weeks severance pay for every year served to a maximum of 6 months salary. This may make sense when a councillor or mayor is voted out of office, but there is zero justification for such a payment to individuals who opt not to run, or who quit. An egregious example was former councillor Sohi, who ran in the last municipal election!and then quit a few weeks later after winning a federal seat with the Liberal Party of Canada. He received, and claimed he was entitled to the transition payment. In the real world, you don’t get a severance package for quitting.

We call on the Edmonton City Council to rescind this part of the compensation package for elected officials effective immeadiately. If they refuse to do so, we call on the Province of Alberta to step in to ensure Edmonton taxpayers are no longer forced to pay for this indefensible perk. Finally, we call on the City to demand Sohi return the funds he took. He quit, triggering an expensive byelection, and moving into a higher paying role as infrastructure minister, where he further damaged Alberta’s economy. No politician is entitled to their entitlements.
