The United States is one of only two countries in the world that bases its taxation policies on citizenship rather than residence; the other is Eritrea. It is time to end this antiquated policy.

For many fellow Americans, dutifully paying tax is just a way of life, but Americans living abroad are taxed on the basis of their citizenship, not residency. A US citizen, no matter where he or she resides and regardless of the type and source of income, is subject to US federal income tax. A tax that is paid on top of the taxes of the country they reside in, sometimes doubling their tax bill even while the citizens may have not set foot in the US since birth; 20% of US citizens abroad even consider revoking their citizenship as they can no longer afford to be double-taxed- this is wrong.

The Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad Act aims to replace the current citizenship-based taxation regime, which has existed since the time of the Civil War, with the residency-based taxation that the rest of the world employs.

The Tax Fairness For Americans Abroad Act was introduced into Congress on December 20th, 2018 by Rep George Holding of North Carolina. By taking this first step toward ending the onerous burdens of citizenship-based taxation, Americans will become more competitive in the international job market and free to pursue opportunities around the world. Compliancy costs and the burden of exposure to double taxation will be significantly reduced, and tax fairness will be restored for US citizens living and working overseas.

Representative George Holding, who is retiring in 2020, needs a Democratic sponsor to get this bill through the House of Representatives. This is a fault that affects both democrats and republicans alike - let's make this a bipartisan bill, and help make tax fair.

This petition will boldly demonstrate that Americans across the political spectrum want Congress to take action on this tax system now by enacting a plan that uses the framework of the Tax Fairness For Americans Abroad Act to finally make a difference.
