Concerned Citizen started this petition to Dollar General

Dollar General Distribution Center is one of the largest employers in Fulton, MO. With the recent Coronavirus or COVID-19 pandemic, this means that it is even more important for them to be responsible when faced with a positive test result within their Distribution Center. With employees commuting from Jefferson City, Columbia, and surrounding areas, a poorly managed outbreak could prove devastating to our community as well as those in surrounding areas. That is why we are reaching out with this petition in an effort to show Dollar General that we will not sit by and allow them to put the health of our friends, loved ones, and communities at risk for monetary profit.
Dollar General has not been screening employees appropriately upon entering the building. They take temperatures, but do not do a verbal screening: “have you traveled outside of the state recently? “Have you or someone you know been in contact with someone who has COVID-19?” “Have you had any of the following symptoms...?” Etc. We have all experienced these screening questions when entering a public building- a doctor’s office for example- as a way to help gauge an individuals risk. This is especially important because there is a 14 day incubation period in which individuals may not show symptoms or have a fever.
Dollar General is not requiring masks to be worn inside the building. They have left this “optional” for their employees, but in doing so, they are putting everyone in the building at risk. The masks that the general public are wearing do more to protect others from you than they do to protect the actual individual wearing the mask, as they keep respiratory droplets from entering the air or contaminating surfaces. So the people who are concerned for their health and wearing masks are in reality only protecting those around them, and have been left with no way of protecting themselves.
Dollar General was made aware of the first positive case of COVID-19 in their building the week of June 28th. As a result, they shut down, but for less than 24 hours- just long enough to sanitize surfaces. They then required that every employee report for their shifts. No additional screening was done when employees returned. No testing was implemented to help identify anyone who may have been infected. Dollar General is convinced that they are doing enough, because they are doing what they are required to do. However, there has now been another confirmed case at the distribution center. If sanitizing surfaces was enough, these two cases would have never happened, because Dollar General has been sanitizing surfaces since the pandemic began. The majority of COVID-19 cases have been from contact with an infected individual, NOT from contaminated surfaces. There has been additional research done that has shown that COVID-19 is not as easily spread from surface contact as we originally thought. The CDC even specifically says on their website that if there is a case of COVID-19 detected in a workplace, there are often asymptomatic or presymptomatic individuals present. The CDC also reccomends screening and TESTING of all employees once a positive case is reported. Dollar General has not done any of this, as it is recommended and not required. This shows that they are only willing to do the bare minimum to protect their employees and members of our community. They are offering no paid leave right those who are concerned for their health or the health of their family members, and have still not implemented testing or furthered their screening processes or given anyone any way to further protect themselves. This is essentially forcing people to work in unsafe conditions, leaving many people scared for their lives and for their families, but unable to act, as no one can afford to go without pay for an extended period of time. Even if someone were to accept the unpaid leave that is offered, it wouldn’t do any good, because Dollar General is refusing to take responsibility for the health of their employees and enforce mask wearing, testing, screening, or anything above and beyond the basic requirements. So really all taking a leave of absence would do is make someone two weeks poorer and then put them right back into the situation they were trying to avoid once they are forced to return to an unsafe work environment where COVID-19 is still spreading due to lack of initiative from the company.
We cannot stand by and let Dollar General risk the health of our families, of our community. Sign this petition today to let Dollar General know that enough is enough, and that we demand they take initiative and protect their employees and their families.
