Decision Maker Response

Edward R. Royce’s response

Feb 15, 2017 — Thank you to everyone who signed this petition in support of the White Coat Waste Project’s work to end government-sponsored animal testing. As an animal lover, this is an issue close to my heart. My staff in Washington even includes a Westie named Archie who greets constituents visiting the office.

Last December, I joined a bipartisan group of colleagues to request an audit of the billions of dollars the government spends on experiments on dogs and other animals. There is a troubling lack of transparency and accountability to taxpayers in this arena.

I also helped introduce common-sense legislation, the Federal Accountability in Chemical Testing (FACT) Act, to tackle this issue head on. The FACT Act improves reporting by federal agencies so that Congress and the public can determine if the government is meeting its mandates to replace expensive and unnecessary animal testing with less costly and more accurate alternative methods like sophisticated computer models and cell-based tests.

Taxpayers have a right to know how their money is being spent. And the government should avoid testing on animals when superior alternatives are available. The FACT Act helps on both accounts.

Thank you for speaking out and urging my colleagues to take action to protect animals, modernize science, and cut government waste. Your support is invaluable. Rest assured, I’ll keep fighting for this cause.
