Do not put a bust of Rush Limbaugh in the Missouri Sate Capital Building!
The Issue
Placing a bust of Rush Limbaugh in the Hall of Famous Missourians at the State Capitol Building would not only offend many Missourians, many Americans; it would also send an extremely negative message to other nations and entities. It would be a great disservice to our country if America were to be associated with the statements, actions, and personality of such a vitriol and contemptuous person.
By his own admission, “… if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.” Rush Limbaugh entered drug rehabilitation in October of 2003 because he was under investigation for drug abuse and illegally purchasing drugs. Instead of being “sent up”, as he believes people like him should be, he was merely fined $30,000 and ordered to continue rehabilitation for eighteen months. The citizens of this country do not want to be viewed as hypocrites, and they most definitely do not want someone who commits such acts to be seen as their mouthpiece.
His remarks concerning the torture of Abu Ghraib prisoners were nothing short of atrocious. According to him, the people that committed those crimes were simply “… having a good time … you ever heard of emotional release? You ever heard of need to blow some steam off?” The people of America do not want to be viewed as sadists that approve of torture as a form of stress relief after a hard day at work.
His recent misogynist attacks on Ms. Sandra Fluke were beyond shocking. Not only did he state that she was a “slut” and a “prostitute”, he also commented that she has “so much sex that it’s amazing she can still walk” and demanded that she post “the videos of all this sex … online so we can see what we are getting for our money.” By making such statements, he demeans nearly every woman in the United States of America. Women should be commended, not shamed, for taking responsibility for their personal health and wellbeing. We do not want the people of other countries to believe that we have no respect for our mothers, daughters, and sisters.
These are only a few examples of Rush Limbaugh’s bigotry and hypocrisy. Over the course of his career, he has proven himself beyond the shadow of a doubt to be a person of loose morals and questionable judgment. The busts of Harry Truman, General John Pershing, Josephine Baker, Edwin Hubble, Rose Philippine Duchesne (who is a Catholic Saint!), and other upstanding citizens belong in the Hall of Famous Missourians because of their selfless service to our country, their noble ideals, and their commendable actions. We urge you to not bestow the same honor upon Rush Limbaugh, a person that is so unworthy of it. By doing so, we say to the world, "This is who represents and speaks for us. This is who we are."
Rush Limbaugh does not represent our great nation. He does not speak for our citizens. He is not who we are. Please do not send this message to the world by including him in the Hall of Famous Missourians.
