The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation announced steep hike in fare. A 66% hike in fare has been implemented from May 10 and from October 1, the second phase of hike will be implemented. This steep hike in fare in one of the largest serving intra city metro rail facility in the world is bound to affect people of Delhi for whom Metro is the most convenient mode of transport.
This unprecedented move comes ostensibly to increase the profit according to DMRC itself! Delhi Metro’s core mandate is to provide Mass Rapid Transit System to the people of Delhi- it was never meant to reap in profits from the pockets of common people who have over the time chosen Metro as favoured means of travel in Delhi.
Delhi is known to be one of the most polluted cities in the world. Heavy smog along with intense traffic congestion are regular phenomena experienced by people of Delhi. In such a situation when it should have been of prime importance to expand public transport, the DMRC has come out with the decision to increase fare hike which is bound to reduce daily foot falls from Metro and increase vehicular traffic including profit fetching Ola and Uber cabs. Presently, Delhi Metro caters to around 26 lakh commuters in the city. A study by the Centre for Development Economics at the Delhi School of Economics has shown that the Delhi Metro has caused significant reduction in pollutants. But the increased fare would compel many to abandon travel by metro, leading to increase in vehicular pollution
Transport system such as the Delhi Metro is meant to serve the people. Increase in profit can not be the modus operandi for such infrastructure. It is the working class, lower middle class, students and youth who will face the brunt of the fare hike. We must not allow profit-mongering over people’s interest.
The worst hit people include-
working class and middle class workers.
for most of the people ,specially students metro is going to be *expensive*.
For example, if a student is travelling from shahdara to Shivaji park the current fare is 19 rupees for one side.
It will be *30 rupees* till semester for one side and *40 rupees* with the beginning of October for one side.
That would be the *double* of the *current fare.*
It is notable that most of the colleges of Delhi University *do not have Hostels*.
The worst affected students will be -
*Daily commuters who come from places like Haryana border,Gaziabad, Samaypur baadli, Mundka, etc*
*Women commuters who belong to middle class and lower middle class sects*
*Students who travel from villages near Delhi to study in DU*
Being a student of Delhi University myself, It affects me as I have to travel daily from Metro for college and we don't have hostel facilities.
1. Suspension of the fare hike.
2. Introduction of STUDENT PASSES for Students of Universities like University of Delhi the way they have for DTC Buses.
3. Report of ''Fare Review Committee" should be publicized.
