Why this petition matters

Started by Jamila Larson

The vast majority of public and charter schools in DC require uniforms. These compulsory dress code polices disproportionately effect low income children. Punishment for not coming to school wearing the "right clothes" ranges from detention to suspension to being turned away at the door.

The right to an education should be protected for ALL children, homeless and housed, rich and poor. Yet schools that don't require uniforms tend to serve more affluent students. Too many low income children are being unfairly denied their right to full school participation based on their family's ability to purchase specific clothes. Yes, many schools help but one or even two uniforms are not enough for families who do not have laundry facilities. Kids are being punished for something they cannot control.

As concerned parents, teachers, and community members, we ask that all DC public, charter and private schools that REQUIRE uniforms PROVIDE an ample supply to students (key word: ample) who cannot otherwise afford them. School is more important than the right color clothes. Children without uniforms should not go without an education. Let our children learn!
