Stop Bill 203: The Alberta Standard Time Act from becoming law in Alberta.

Bill 203, if passed, will freeze Alberta time at Mountain Daylight Time (Central Standard Time or Saskatchewan Time).  This will create confusion among the rest of Canada and North America at a time when Alberta is trying to recover from a major recession.  Furthermore, daylight savings was introduced to reduce peak energy consumption and assist Alberta in its green initiatives. Introducing this bill is contrary to the stated environmental objectives proposed by the current Alberta government.  If the rest of North America (with the exception of Arizona, Hawaii, and Saskatchewan) can change their clocks twice a year, why can't a sophisticated and educated province like Alberta do the same and maintain the status quo.   The Alberta government established a special committee to review Bill 203 and recommended that the Bill not be implemented, due to the concerns of the business community and the majority of citizens. Yet, the premier has decided to move forward on this Bill, despite the recommendations of her committee.

Consider the following survey questions:

1. Do you want to confuse and create uncertainty with Alberta's major business partners (such as California, Texas, New York, Washington, Ontario, Quebec) by not changing our time when they do?

Yes
No

 2. Do you want the passing of Bill 203 to be a key factor in a company's decision whether to locate or invest in Alberta?  Many  companies have expressed their opposition to the Bill, particularly airlines, trading companies, transportation companies, financial companies., energy companies and sports teams.

Yes
No

 3. Do you want Airline flights leaving Calgary and Edmonton for international and certain domestic to leave at very inconvenient hours for 4 months of the year?  For example, under Bill 203, scheduled flights leaving Calgary and Edmonton at 5:00 am would instead leave at 4:00 am as Airlines will not adjust their schedules to account for Alberta not changing our time relative to other jurisdictions throughout the world.

Yes
No

 4. Do you want children going to school in the dark?  Under Bill 203,  sunrise is not until 9:35 am in Calgary and 9:50 am in Edmonton for most of December and January.

Yes
No

 5. In order to remain in sync with the rest of the league, do you want NHL hockey games in Alberta starting at 8:30 pm during weekdays and 9:00 pm on weekends?

Yes
No

 6. Do you want your favorite TV and sports shows starting an hour later for 4 months of the year?

Yes
No

 7. Do you agree with the Premier's decision to override the recommendation of the Special Committee to scrap Bill 203?  The Special Committee reached the decision based on the unintended consequences of the Bill, some of which are discussed in this survey.   Two key reasons for the Committee's decision was the negative response of the business community to the Bill, and the lack of clear consensus between adopting Central Standard Time (Saskatchewan Time), Pacific Daylight Time (BC Time) or maintaining the status quo.

Yes
No

 8. Do you want Alberta to change to Central Standard Time, the same time as Saskatchewan, as proposed in Bill 203, regardless of the issues discussed in this survey, and be out of sync with the majority of the world for 4 months per year?

Yes
No

 9. Do you agree that it is important for Alberta to be consistent in our time and change clocks twice a year like our major trading partners in the United States, Europe, Eastern Canada, and British Columbia do?

Yes
No

The above survey questions consider the unintended consequences of the passage of Bill 203 on Alberta's economy and social fabric.  The Special Committee in considering these issues recommended against Bill 203.  However, the Premier seems intent on pushing through this legislation.  If you answered NO to any of the above questions, and Yes to Question 9, you are AGAINST Bill 203.  Please sign this Petition and make your voice heard in preventing passage of this unnecessary and highly disruptive Bill and its likely negative consequences to Alberta.

Thank You.
