Jessica Buckholz started this petition to Dixie State University and

Its been in the news recently that Dixie State University is contemplating a name change. It’s totally understandable given the current political climate, but ultimately not the most effective thing That could be done to create change in the community.

I would suggest a compromise similar to what the University of Utah did when they decided to keep the Utes as their mascot. They kept the mascot and implemented an education program for all incoming freshman to share the history of the tribe and its significance to Utah. It would be much more effective that we use the name to open a dialogue and start a conversation against racism.

Maybe trainings could be implemented into Freshman orientation or there could be an added required 1 credit class on dismantling systemic racism for degree requirements. Just changing the name will change nothing. Nobody will learn anything and it will just be a very expensive PR move and rebrand. Let’s keep the name and start a conversation that can make real and lasting change.
