The freedom of speech and association is one of the most fundamental of our rights, and nowhere is this right more important than in an academic setting. My education has been greatly blessed and furthered by meeting like minded students with drive, intelligence, and dedication through similar organizations. The leadership opportunities they offer are invaluable to those who participate. The role of the University should be further these social bonds and opportunities. I feel it is a both a great disservice to the students at the University and an impermissible infringement on their rights to ban these organizations from campus.

I think it's a 1st Amendment issue, specifically: The U.S. Supreme Could decided in Roberts v. United States Jaycees (1984) that "implicit in the right to engage in activities protected by the First Amendment" is "a corresponding right to associate with others in pursuit of a wide variety of political, social, economic, educational, religious, and cultural ends.

The inconsistent and irrational policies of administrators in our institutions of higher learning are rapidly approaching a level of absurdity. It is time that a national movement for pushback, driven by the students themselves, begins to assert itself.

I thought that phi beta pie's argument was compelling and enough to help me see that not allowing greek letters based on the university personal opinion on is a clear infringement on their 1st amendment. The LDS club LDSSA is able to openly and correctly express their standards in their club by the "LDS" portion of the name. Though LDS in written our alphabet it is also a symbol that represents more than just 3 letters. Why than can PHI BETA PIE not use the greek alphabet to help symbolism meaning to their club. If the only answer is that the University believes greek letters will generate a negative public image to the school then in than it is clearly and blatantly molding freedom of speech to better its own image by allowing a church organization to do it over students with good intentions. Its unfair and unconstitutional to not fund a good club who's club motto and spirit you've already agreed meets DSU's standard over religious and other groups hows acronyms hold meaning in themselves.

It is only fair for DIxie Stat University to have the same equal rights as other Universities in the state.
