Rowena Rowland started this petition to Duffield residents and

Diversity in Duffield is a collective of local residents who have come together to address and promote awareness around multiculturalism. The neighbourhood organisation formed after Duffield Parish Council twice rejected a resident’s proposal to erect a banner alongside the former sign on the A6 which heroed NHS key workers. The intention of the banner is to encourage people to celebrate their identities, and the identities of others, especially those whose experiences are often overlooked. The ongoing initiative, which began in July 2020, exposed multiple outdated policies that we as a community need to address for the future development of our locale.

Our aim is to gather support for the erection of a banner in Duffield village which celebrates diversity, inspires a new generation of inclusivity and activates conversations and education around multiculturalism, so that people from all backgrounds and ethnicities feel welcome, valued and heard within this community.

The proposed banner follows on from the NHS sign that was situated in the heart of the village throughout the pandemic, acknowledging the incredible work of NHS key workers, 44.3% of whom are ethnic minorities (gov.uk). We are so pleased to have the support of local businesses and our friends at Pride in Belper who recently commissioned a series of banners and flags, showing support for, and solidarity with LGBTQIA+ groups.

We strongly believe that celebrating diversity and inclusion should not be seen as a political campaign. Rather, the prospective banner designs explore universal themes such as education, inclusivity and identity, which when embraced help to create a positive and supportive community. By setting this precedent, we can use our voices to make our neighbourhood a safer and more progressive place to live, now and for future generations.

By referring to other apolitical organisations and councils who are exercising a broader commitment to equality we can move forward towards examining the past, sharing our history, and celebrating diversity as we move into the future.

Please support the erection of the proposed banner, and help us promote diversity and equality in Duffield by signing our petition!
