We want to see dive professionals recognized and compensated fairly for their labor.

The concept of “tipping” dive professionals has become a hot topic on social media recently. This discussion has brought to light an ugly truth: many dive professionals are either unpaid, paid less than minimum wage, or rely entirely on consumer tips without regulation.

Being a dive professional is skilled, risky, and physically demanding work. Many people spend fortunes to become a dive professional only to find that their investment is unlikely to pay off. The fees involved with being a dive professional (training agency membership, liability coverage, equipment costs, etc) often cost more than the individual can earn. While some dive businesses have contracts with dive professionals that work for them, these arrangements are widely unregulated and often inequitable.

If the issue of fair pay for dive professionals goes ignored any longer, we risk far more than simply the livelihoods of people who work in diving. The dive industry will risk stagnation; innovation cannot occur without diverse talent that can afford to be invested. Uncertain incomes for dive professionals will continue the trend of dead-end or short-lived scuba careers and sacrificing financial stability to work in diving. We must stop expecting and burdening consumers to be the ones providing dive professionals with fair pay.

How can you help?

·       Divers: to become curious about the practices of the dive businesses you patronize. To reward dive professionals with intention and not out of obligation. Show dive professionals gratitude, when deserved, in ways that will serve them, for example: inquire about how monetary tips get distributed, leave a detailed review, share photos and videos, provide services you can offer, refer friends, tag and engage with them on social media, etc. Not sure what will help? Just ask. Advocate for dive professionals and support businesses that treat their employees well.

·       Dive business owners: to compensate your staff fairly. To provide, at the least, a minimum wage if not a minimum living wage for dive professionals. To be transparent with customers and staff about tipping practices. To distribute monetary tips justly. To restructure unfair internships and ensure that anyone providing work for your business is not being taken advantage of. To consider rewarding employee performance by evaluating the employee’s ability to meet measurable strategic objectives.

·       Dive professionals: to advocate for yourselves. To have conversations with peers, coworkers, employers, customers, and the public which bring pay issues to light. To contribute to industry data in this field. To negotiate pay with their employers with the intention to help yourselves and the businesses you work for. To grow a better dive industry by identifying ways you can contribute – and ask to be rewarded for them.

It’s time we start discussing inequity and unfair labor practices in the dive industry. This petition is only the beginning. The more people pledge to devote their attention to these issues, the closer we all come to solutions. It is important those with the ability to do so help gather tangible data to help inform decisions in this field. We all have the ability to compensate talent, revitalize the dive industry, and bring about a better era of scuba diving for all involved!
