TRAFFIC SAFETY PETITION - ROGERS/WILLIAMSON TO SCHENK’S CORNERS

The traffic corridor from Rogers and Williamson to Schenk’s Corners is a primary safety concern for the Marquette neighborhood, Starkweather/Atwood/ Schenk/Yahara (SASY) neighborhood, Marquette and O’Keeffe school communities and patrons of all the businesses located on and near this thoroughfare.

Concerns include:
 --High-volume automobile traffic and chronic speeding
 --Flagrant violation of traffic signals
 --Multiple points of conflict for bikes, pedestrians and bus patrons
 --Insufficient lighting in important intersections
 --Safety for school children coming from three different neighborhoods
 --Storm water run-off and river health

The City of Madison proposes the partial reconstruction of a portion of Winnebago Street and installation of a new diagonal bike crossing at Riverside/Winnebago. We believe this may address some bicycle traffic concerns but is woefully inadequate in terms of addressing the larger set of issues.

The Winnebago/Riverside project, as proposed, only addresses a fraction of the area’s safety concerns and perpetuates the status quo. As a resident or patron of the area between Rogers/Williamson and Schenk’s Corners, I strongly suggest the City of Madison take the opportunity to expand the scope of this project to appropriately address the wide range of issues in this area.
