Why this petition matters

Started by Darlene Green

200 Main Street was purchased by the District of Sicamous in 2015 from local tax dollars as a “Community Asset and possible future Park” location.  The community has been utilizing this  space as an open park and for many local events (such as Canada Day and Xmas celebrations, Movie night the Park, concerts and other gatherings) since the purchase 6 years

200 Main Street has been recognized by the District of Sicamous as a PARK.  We know this because it is advertised on the District of Sicamous’s very own website as a “Park”.

200 Main Street has also been recognized by Sicamous town council as a PARK.  Most recently Council passed a first reading (AUGUST.11.2021 ) to amend the current zoning bylaw for the property from C1 “Commercial” to P3 “Park”.

200 Main Street was bought as a PARK, advertised as a PARK, used as a park and as recently as 12 weeks ago, passed the first reading of legally being designated a PARK.

As a group of concerned residents, our focus has been singular since learning of the Council’s decision to move the proposed Shuswap Secwepemc Healing Center from the 400 block (across from Askew’s) to this valuable green space Park at the end of our Main Street.

The initial grant application for this project states, ”there have been several stakeholder workshops, community consultation exercises and consultants reports that address ALL of the interested groups that subscribe to Community Wellness and overall Healthy Built Environments.” Oddly enough, the residents of Sicamous cannot recall a time when they were invited to attend any workshops or even consulted on the proposed change of the location for this development to our community PARK at 200 Main.

We wish to be completely clear with the Mayor, the Councillors and the staff of the District of Sicamous.  We (the residents) are NOT OK with this park being developed in any capacity, for any reason.

It does not matter how fancy the building is or how famous the architect.  Once the park is developed it is gone forever.  It is also NOT the resident's job to find a suitable alternative for the LOCATION of the purposed development, that is the job of the District of Sicamous.

By way of this Petition we call on all District of Sicamous taxpayers and others affected by this proposed development and loss of our beautiful, small town PARK to please show your opposition and support by signing this Petition to Save our Community Greenspace!  200 Main Street.
