Brenda Avelar started this petition to District Board of Education

Recently the Salinas Union High School District (SUHSD) School Board, along with the support of Superintendent Dan Burns, has decided that it is a good idea to cut Health class in half and make it one semester long. The reason they cut Health class in half was to make room for an Ethnic Studies class. We the students of Salinas have decided to take action on keeping Health class year-long. We understand that Ethnic Studies is an important class, but it should NOT affect how we learn about things that keep us healthy and what does not. In a year-long Health class, teachers take their time to teach us important information that we need to strive and survive in life. They also teach us skills that could be useful to us in life. Not only that, but this class helps SAVE lives. If Health class is cut in half, students will NOT be able to learn the necessary life skills that a year-long Health class teaches. The suggestion to cut Health class was made by the graduation committee that was hand selected by the school principals. Most of the people in the committee did not know the Health curriculum. MOST board members from the meeting, that was held on March 26, 2019, acknowledged they had not seen the Health class curriculum, and only ONE person from the board said they have seen it. It is still possible for the board members to change their mind on the subject. It is going to take student, parent/guardian, community support to make this happen. After all, they work for the community and the voters to make it a better place for us, the students, to learn.
