SD 308's sports fees are much too high

Sports fees February 12th 2018 made a huge leap in only a couple of hours. The sports fees went from only $75 dollars all the way to $300 dollars, with no cap. In other words, kids that take part in two or more sports are paying any where from $600 dollars and up. It simply is not affordable for the families in this community.

Impact on the community and its students

Many students and coaches at the high schools spoke out at a meaning not long after the decision. They all agreed that sports should not just be for the financially well off. This mainly due to the fact that our student body is 25% low income households, so these fees are unrealistic and or impossible for them to ever pay. Not only is affecting who can and cannot play but a deeper affect is taking place. Students who are apart of that 25% if they are really good at the sport they have committed to play he or she may be relying on a scholarship for college for that sport. If they cannot continue to play that sport how will they ever be able to get recognized by colleges of their amazing talent in a sport. I have friends and me included, who are being negatively impacted by these high fees. A girl that attends OEHS by the name of Grace is being impacted from these fees. She each year normally plays: basketball, volleyball, softball, and wrestling each year in the district. For her that would be around $1200 just to play four sports she's been playing pretty much her whole life. Her and her family are not happy about having to pay even near $1200 just for their daughter to play sports. Others just like her are going through the same issue and its not remotely fair to the students and families.

Do you agree with their decisions?
