Rachael Dwyer started this petition to District 202 School Board

Everyday, students across America enter their classrooms with the possible threat of a school shooting. The number of guns fired on school grounds since the Columbine High School shooting of 1999 has been over 240, and it is very clear that these numbers are not decreasing. Schools around America have taken bigger measures in insuring the safety of their student through active shooter trainings, but it is time for more advanced training.

My goal for this petition is to raise awareness of what students have to face everyday at school, and to take more drastic measures in the training of students and staff at schools so we are more prepared for this possible threat. One way we would be able to train the school community for this possible threat is more intense active shooter drills. Instead of blocking the entrances of classrooms and waiting, students and staff could practice exiting the building when it is safe to do so. Another way we can more affectively train for active shootings is having more assemblies and presentations to show students the real risks and threats in the world. In the society we live in today, it can be so easy to be blind to the unfortunate truth of these threats. I believe the time for change, and to do more to ensure students and staff safety is now. Taking a little more class time out of the day is a very small price to pay if it means educating the school population on this very serious issue.
