High school students do not get near the amount of sleep as they are supposed to. According to a 2010 large-scale study published in The Journal of Adolescent Health, approximately 8% of US high school students get the recommended amount of sleep. About 23% get six hours of sleep on an average school night and 10% get only 5 hours. This is a major problem that can easily be fixed with later start times.

By changing the school day start time to even one hour later allows for students to get much more sleep, which results in better brain activity. Numerous studies have shown that children going through adolescence need the most sleep after infants because of the amount of development going on. Specifically, one study by the American Academy of Pediatrics says, “the recommended middle and high schools start time should be at 8:30 am or later to give students the opportunity to get the amount of sleep they need”.
