I am a Plainfield North Senior who has met the requirements to have off-campus lunch every Monday and Wednesday. Although I truly enjoy this privilege, only having it two days a week does not seem much like a reward. We were told our freshman year that if we kept our grades up and behaved well during the school year, our senior year we could qualify for off- campus, early release, or late arrival. It makes senior year just a bit better because you are being rewarded for being a good student for the last three years of high school. However, only allowing students who chose off- campus leave school during their lunch/ study hall only two days a week seems unfair when early release/ late arrival get it everyday.

To qualify for all these three options, you need to have the same things. Be a good student and have a certain GPA. However, you only get to choose one. For many students, they choose off campus because they may need to take another course to graduate or are taking another AP class to lighten their load in college. Students who take this route have a comparative disadvantage because they do not get it everyday.

First, those who choose off campus make good use of this valuable hour in their day. Students can go out to lunch with their friends, take a nap, watch TV, see their pets, see their family, and other options as well. Being able to go home personally makes me feel so much better when I come back to school. I feel refreshed and if I was having a bad day having the hour to check out, away from a school setting is relaxing. That is why I feel that off- campus should be allowed to happen everyday, just like early release and late arrival.

Secondly, students are able to eat better meals. Since elementary school the Plainfield School District has repeatedly talked about the importance of eating healthy, but it is very hard to when you do not have the equipment to create a healthy meal in the school setting. With no microwaves or fridges students have to improvise on how to bring those good meals to school and make them last all the way till their lunch. Which for 6B lunch is not until 12:37. Therefore, if a student from 6B brings their lunch from home they have to find a way to keep it fresh from 7:05 to 12:37. Therefore, a lot of healthy foods are not able to be brought to school because by the time the student eats it is soggy or spoiled. Furthermore, the lunch lines do not help either, although there are some good options, only having hot dogs and chicken sandwiches for the 3 out of the 5 days of the week causes students to miss many ingredients that are necessary in a meal. Allowing students to go home creates an opportunity for them to have the option to eat healthy, whether it is at a restaurant or at home. Either way, the food can be fresh and cooked to their liking. For example, when I go home I then have the option to eat salmon and baked potatoes. There is no possible way I would be able to bring that type of lunch to school without it being disgusting by lunch time.

Furthermore, allowing the students to go home everyday also creates an efficiency of time. Students have to keep an eye on the clock to make sure they get back to school on time, otherwise their tardiness will result in a hero. This also allows senior students to prepare for college. In college, schedules might be messy and there may not be a lot of time to spend to get food. With this hour, students can have the opportunity to learn how to make or grab a quick healthy lunch in a timely manner.

Lastly, I swim for Plainfield Swimming during the fall, we do not have a pool at any of the Plainfield schools which causes us to swim at the C.W. Avery YMCA. Because it is not a school owned property we do not have lockers there to keep our swim bags and equipment. Therefore, everyday we must lug our swim bags and equipment back and forth. Now that I am a senior I can leave my stuff in my car instead of bringing it inside the school. However, there are some mornings where I am running behind to go to school and do not have time to pack my suit, towel, water bottle, food for after school, etc. On those days if I have off- campus I do not stress out in the morning because I know that I can come home and pack all of things during my lunch hour. Even though we are not located at the school, I see many other student athletes who bring their bags for their sports to school in the morning. Therefore, they also have to pack it in the morning or the night before. But, if they are having a day where they do not have time to pack it they can rely on their lunch hour to go home and pack their bags and bring them back to school.

In the end, having off- campus everyday would benefit the seniors who choose to do it and create an added part of their school day that they can look forward too.
