Dispose of Mike MacDonald, force Harbaugh to make good hires, not just his buddies
Why this petition matters
We've all seen enough from Mike MacDonald. He's blown two THREE POSESSION leads. We should be 4-0, but Mike MacDonald decided otherwise. This also falls on John Harbaugh's lack of leadership in hiring coaches.
Let me explain.
Mike simply doesn't know the fundamentals of defense. One specific play I remember is him putting Jalyn Armour-Davis (JAD) on an island with Tyreek Hill in our week two matchup where we blew a 21 point lead. I like JAD but it is incredibly foolish to put anyone in single coverage with Tyreek Hill. Not to mention, we had the resources to play deep coverage; Marcus Williams is a top 5 coverage safety in the league, who had 2 interceptions already in that game, but Mike MacDonald decided against using him. This is one of the many poor coaching decisions I've seen from MacDonald and frankly he belongs on the college level in Ann Arbor.
Now how does this fall on John Harbaugh?
John has repeatedly hired coordinators who have some connection to him from the past or through his brother Jim, who is the head coach of the University of Michigan. One of the only reasons why MacDonald was hired in the first place was because he was Michigan's defensive coordinator the previous season under Jim Harbaugh. I call this concept Harbaugh's "buddy-buddy" system. A much better option would have been to hire Brian Flores, a talented defensive mastermind with head coaching experience, along with Anthony Weaver, who was an excellent in house candidate. There is also a case to be made for keeping Wink Martindale, the defensive coordinator who was fired, but this is unimportant to the conversation.
This similar "buddy-buddy" sentiment can also be seen in the hire of Marty Mornhinweg, who is legitimately one of the worst coaches I have ever seen. The only reason why Mornhinweg was on the coaching staff to begin with is because he coached on the Eagles when Harbaugh was an assistant with Philadelphia. This goes beyond coaching though. Ben Mason was a draft pick of the Ravens that arguably should have gone undrafted, and did not make the 53-man roster. Ben played fullback, and many were confused by the pick as we already had a pro bowl fullback in Pat Ricard on the roster. Where did Ben Mason go to school? Michigan. I think you get the point by now.
What must be done is simple. John Harbaugh must relieve Mike MacDonald of his duties as Defensive Coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens. I feel bad for Mike because he was offered great step up in his career, but its obvious that he's not ready for the moment yet. Going forward, Harbaugh must use actual analysis in his coaching hires rather than using his patented "buddy-buddy" system. Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope you can sign this to try and make a difference.
