Disney, Stop Supporting Harmful Anti-LGBTQ+ Legislation
Why this petition matters
It's recently been made known to the public that Disney executives have been donating millions of dollars from the company's funding towards Conservative Floridan politicians authoring, pushing, and supporting the Don't Say Gay bill, a piece of legislation that will limit educators' and schools' abilities to talk about LGBT+ identities or topics in an educational environment. This significantly harms LGBT+ children not only because it prevents them from obtaining the necessary information about their own identities when they may need it, but also because it spreads the message and enforces the idea that these identities in themselves are harmful, unacceptable, or any less valid than their straight and cis counterparts. For Disney to support this action, particularly whilst simultaneously claiming support for the LGBT+ community, is both appalling and hurtful for a variety of reasons.
Regardless of whether Don't Say Gay alone is passed, Disney's donations to it are enough to make their stance on LGBT+ issues very clear, as well as their overall willingness to actively push against the rights of queer people all around the country. Given the financial and cultural power that Disney as a corporation has, whether or not they have the power to influence these changes is out of the question. Anti-LGBT+ legislation has always and will continue to harm queer people of all ages and walks of life if it is put into place and allowed to go unchallenged. Laws of this kind only work to actively inhibit the personal freedoms of the American people, costing some their lives, and they do so in service of little other than bigotry.
With Disney's support, it will only become easier for queerphobic lawmakers to institute harmful legislation that puts members of the LGBT+ community at risk and takes away their rights. If it has not already, Disney's support of anti-LGBT legislation is going to hurt people. That is not okay. Now and always, it is vitally important that we, as people, as a country, and as a community, work together to fight against bigotry and injustice in whatever ways we know how. It is not fair that queer people's identities are treated as less than, as taboo, and the suffering that arises from that treatment must come to an end. Please help raise awareness of this and help send Disney a message through your signing this of petition, or through any other methods you can. Thank you.
