Lydia Fecteau started this petition to Disabled people and their friends and family

Some states have started task forces to decide who gets a ventilator if there is a shortage. States like Alabama and Texas has decided that those with cognitive disabilities, Traumatic brain injuries, Dementia, and mental health problems may not qualify to receive a ventilator if they need it in case of COVID-19 virus. These people are human beings and deserve a chance at a life even a life that may be limited. We also see many people out there who have home ventilation. They are afraid that if times get desperate, their ventilators may be confiscated for use in others. They would like assurances that the government will not confiscate ventilators. The disabled members of your community (and those who support them) request you consider the following measures be considered when establishing protocols for dealing with COVID 19:

  1. Any councils, committees, or task forces formed to deal with this crisis should include disabled members. Please this request is not just to appoint the heads of disability interest groups but those who identify as disabled themselves. Consider the mantra of disability activists, “Nothing about us, without us.”
  2. Before rationing care, your policies should review alternatives from previous protocols. This includes, but is not limited to, placing more than one patient on each available ventilator.

This will be a time full of difficult choices but knowing that each voter is valued equally and that you will want to protect the most vulnerable among us. I, the undersigned, urge you to take the above into serious consideration.

Sincerely,

_______
