Student Councils in NITs: Vigilance Awareness Week 2017

Inspired by the theme of Vigilance Awareness Week since last year, we as young students in MNNIT Allahabad feel that ‘Student Council’ will help our college to provide a sound mechanism to ensure stake holders participation and avoid corruption. We also found a relevant direction in this regard by Hon’ble Supreme Court dated 22 September, 2006 in Supreme Court Case number 304 University of Kerala versus Council, Principals', Colleges, Kerala and Others (submitted last year during vigilance awareness week on 05 Nov 2016). In compliance to the order; there are many NITs (Trichy, Warngal, Calicut, Uttarakhand, Bhopal, Raipur etc.) having a faculty guided ‘student councils’ chaired by Director which act as an interface between administration and students. These councils help not only to maintain smooth communication between administration and students but also within students.
They act as a good coordinating institution for various clubs and groups made within NITs. Such an institution helps in maintaining peace, becomes handy in crisis situation while ensuring the right to freedom of expression of students.
Therefore, we request to establish student council based on election on the line of other NITs and IITs. We do not support union model which has scope of violence and unrest. We request for a student body elected by the students and chaired by Director (kindly see the enclosure for election system and structure of councils in other NITs).
We hope implementing the guidelines will somewhere add to the purpose of the vigilance week and the government’s objective of good governance.
