The one way section of Hyer street in between Preston Road and Highland Park High School is meaningless and a danger to both drivers and pedestrians.

Firstly, It doesn’t serve any logistical purpose because it creates thick traffic on Westchester towards Lovers Lane at around 3:30-4:00 every school day. This is because students and faculty from both the Parking garage and the H-lot have to funnel onto this street in order to get to Lovers Lane to get home.

In addition, the one way nature of this block puts unfamiliar drivers at risk for a head on collision. This is a risk because most highschoolers who park in the H-lot on Hyer Street go the wrong way down the one way street in order to get to Preston Road and skip the 5-10 minutes of traffic on Westchester. Drivers who are unfamiliar with this routine (that as many as 50 students follow everyday) are at risk for an accident.

The change from a one way to a two way street would be seamless and easy for two reasons. The first being that most people don’t obey the traffic law in the first place. The second reason is that there is already a stop sign in place at both ends of this block. Not to mention that the street is already wide enough, and arguably was made to be a two-way street.

In conclusion, the change from a one way to a two way street would decrease traffic, and make the high school area safer for the teenage drivers and the residents of that street. This easy adjustment to the nature of this section of Hyer street would be so beneficial that there is seemingly no reason it hasn’t already been made.
