Jake Cull started this petition to Director of Parks Recreation and Forestry

In the last few years, it has become common knowledge that there has been an alarming decline in bee populations over the last few decades.  The same can now be said about butterfly and bird populations.  Some lay blame to drought conditions and lack of nutrition.  Others find fault in habitat destruction and global warming.  Another, rapidly growing number of individuals, blame pesticide, herbicide, insecticide, fungicide, and fertilizer use; created and driven by petrochemical industries.  Regardless of the reason(s), it is a problem which should not be ignored.

At The Cannidote, we would love to be approved by the Parks and Recreation department for a "Natural Area Vegetation Management Plan", where we are able to let "rank growth" and grasses grow above 12" in height; and thus to flower.  These plants, with their various flowering dates, provide a consistent supply of food and shelter for pollinators, insects, and their predators.  "If nothing is eating your garden, then its not part of the ecosystem".  This is a scenario we hope to avoid.  Our wish is to provide a downtown habitat where both man and insect can coincide peacefully and beautifully.

Rank growth typically includes common "weeds" and vigorously growing grasses.  As Ralph Waldo Emerson stated. "What is a weed? A plant whose virtues have not yet been discovered".  The "useless" plants that grow on our property include:

catnip, dandelion, burdock, thistle (not canadian), plantain, dayflower, chicory, and more.

We also grow a multitude of flowers and flowering bushes, and provide numerous bird feeders and baths.   We look forward to growing fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

We sincerely appreciate your taking the time to view our petition, and thank you for your consideration in signing!  These signatures may go a long way in getting proper approval for our project!
