The fear and stigma around COVID-19 victims and their families is on another high altogether. Earlier they were abandoned by society and now even the administration is giving them the elbow.

Case:  On 18th June, Thursday; two men (Aged 43 & 35) from Jammu city lost their lives due to dehydration while wandering under the scorching heat, searching for a space to cremate the body of their deceased COVID-19 positive relative. The victims’ family alleged that when the deceased’s kin took the body for cremation, they were refused cremation at all places. When they asked for help from police and administration no one did anything. As they were wearing PPE kits, they felt suffocated and dehydrated. When pleaded for water they were ridiculed. Later they were taken to the hospital where two of them were declared dead and the third one completely unconscious.

The state is facing issues related to cremation and burial. The administration is unable to designate COVID-19 cremation grounds. The victims’ family is the sole sufferer. How long will they hold the body to be cremated?

Every soul deserves to be departed with full dignity and respect. Also, in such hard times when the family is already grieving for the loss of their dear ones, such negligent acts make time even worst.

We demand immediate identification and designation of separate cremation and burial grounds for COVID-19 casualties.

Please support the cause by signing our petition to make this message reach the administration and help COVID-19 victims’ families do all the last rights processions with peace and traditional customs without any inconvenience.
