Melissa Jimenez started this petition to Senator Dianne Feinstein and

Worldwide, approximately 800,000 women, men, and children are illegally taken away from their families every year to be exploited, harassed, and mistreated (Nassif, 2014). The underlying factors that create this international crime spree of human trafficking are unstable governments that lack resources, money, and stable economies. Surprisingly, this issue does not only occur in third world countries—human trafficking is now occurring in our own backyards. California is the leading state in America with the most cases of human trafficking, this issue has become prevalent in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. Yet, California is not the only state that has dealt with hundreds of cases involving human trafficking: Texas, Florida, New York, Ohio, and Georgia have all come to deal with cases involving some sort of human trafficking (Sorrell, 2017).  The impact that it has had on the victims have been visible through great psychological or emotional vulnerability. Human trafficking has become an issue that has caused quite the commotion, being one of the biggest illegal industries that earn over 150 billion dollars a year, but the money that is being earned is not being reported in taxes, thus causing a loss for the U.S. economy. The worry is that since the money is not being reported then the U.S. economy is losing out on those earnings that could profit the programs that help to confront the issue of human trafficking. Furthermore, human trafficking is also affecting the economy because taxpayers are the ones responsible for the $430 million in government funding for prevention programs and the victims of human trafficking (OCCRP, 2019). As it is the money being utilized for preventive and health measures comes from the taxpayers themselves which means that they are investing in the health of the hundreds of thousands of victims being traumatized from human trafficking.

In order for human trafficking to decrease, we must increase the amount of awareness that there is. This can be done by creating billboards, advertisements, commercials, and infomercials, all which will increase the awareness of the population. By creating these PSA’s society will learn about the signs of a trafficker or how to avoid human trafficking as well as, different facts, thus, making them more educated on trafficking. Almost every household watches television, “nearly 80 percent of the population watching TV on a given day, and accounting for more than half of all the time Americans spend in leisure and sports, watching TV is the choice leisure activity for many Americans” (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018). Since majority of the people in the United States watch television Congress could use that as their advantage. Congress should pay for air time on television and make more PSAs which promote hotlines for people who are at risk of being trafficked

Join us in asking Dianne Feinstein, Kamala D. Harris, and Jimmy Gomez to take a stand to increase the awareness that is lacking in our society pertaining to the topic of human trafficking.
