PERSONAL DATA AT RISK? HEMPSTEAD SHELTER LIKE RIKERS ISLAND? ADOPTERS AND RESCUES LEAVE DUE TO LONG WAIT WITH FULL SHELTER and adoption EXPERTS removed from helping animals.
But HERE'S a concern for ALL those who enter the Hempstead Shelter seeking to view dogs and cats.
You'd better have a drivers licence or you're prohibited from entry.
What's worse? Your personal information is NOT being protected.
Under the direction of Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen, people who now enter the shelter are required to produce either a driver’s license or passport and register at the front desk. Staff members at the front desk hand-write down your information from that document on a piece of paper and include how many children you have with you and are in your home. The process is so willy-nilly that some drivers licences are copied, though only for select visitors. After that process where at certain times you have to wait on a 30 minute line, you have to wait (again up to 30 minutes at times) for an escort to view dogs and cats. It took YEARS for advocates to finally reach a point where the public felt welcome but now under Gillen's administration, our once friendly town shelter has been turned BACK into a copy of “Rikers Island” where since this backwards policy was put in place, our shelter is OVERFLOWING with animals.
A Driver’s license and Passport contain numbers and a date of birth that specifically links an individual to those numbers. When asked at a board meeting how this information was stored, Supervisor Gillen casually said it was kept in a filing cabinet. There are no procedures in place to secure your data. Is the cabinet locked? Where is the cabinet kept? Who has access to this cabinet? How long is information stored? How is information destroyed? WHY IS INFORMATION EVEN NECESSARY TO BEGIN WITH?
A CSEA front counter employee confessed there are NO procedures in place to protect the private information of EVERYONE, no matter their location, who hands in their personal identity.
This situation cannot fall under Gillens smug, casual and deflective responses.
THE ONLY TIME PERSONAL and SENSITIVE INFORMATION IS NEEDED IS FOR THE ADOPTION PROCESS ONLY.
IDENTITY THEFT IS ON THE RISE and Supervisor Gillen is putting you at RISK. Just like a burglar, someone who wants to steal your identity will “not go through the front door, but will use the back door” to gain access. This includes utilizing the DEEP DARK WEB.
This information falling into the wrong hands can wreak havoc on your life and you would not know about it until…..
Passport info is sold on the black market to criminals who use them to open new bank accounts, get jobs, or participate in human trafficking. Most victims don’t find out their information has been used until they 1) get a background check for a job or government assistance 2) are told by a police officer during a traffic stop/border crossing/ or a visit to their house or place of work 3) are told by their bank that they can no longer have an account due to too many bad checks.
This can affect your taxes, social security, credit and ability to travel and your medical records which are MORE at-risk than most other forms of information.
The only time the public should be requested to share personal information is when they are filling out an adoption application or rescue forms. The general public, unless requested, should not have to be escorted through a municipal building that is paid for with YOUR TAX DOLLARS just to view cats and dogs who need homes. Gillen has put already overburdened CSEA employees in charge of doing so WITHOUT formal training.
TELL GILLEN THAT IF SHE'S GOING TO DEMAND SENSITIVE INFORMATION SHE MUST PROTECT EVERY INDIVIDUAL FROM IDENTITY THEFT!!
