Quick resolution of a disciplinary matter involving a senior police officer
We wish to express our dismay at the inordinate length of time it is taking to complete the disciplinary hearing into allegations against suspended Deputy Chief Uday Jaswal. As you are well aware, this situation is not only hugely expensive to the taxpayer but (in your own words) is also creating instability in the Service's senior ranks.
The issue is far more important than just the considerable material costs, and the revolving door of acting appointments. These kinds of allegations, coupled with an inexplicably slow investigative process, undermine public trust in both our police service AND in the accountability framework that is meant to provide reassurance to the public. You have only to look at Canada's Department of National Defence to see the impact of this kind of foot-dragging and lack of effective oversight.
The people of Ottawa are smart enough to say "enough already". They are also smart enough to know that the pay going to the suspended officer has to come from somewhere -- and that that somewhere is the operational budget for policing services. We need effective and properly resourced policing, especially given the strains of this pandemic. We also need effective oversight. After nearly two years, it is time to bring this process to an end. You can, and must, do better.
