On Open Letter to Diana Johnson

Dear Diana Johnson MP,

I have watched the developments of the Domestic Abuse Bill with hope - I am a survivor of domestic violence/abuse and fully support this bill. But I don't support your amendment.

When my car keys were constantly moved, and I thought I was losing the plot, abortion was not what I needed.

When I tried to leave the house, but got thrown into a room with the door barricaded, abortion was not what I needed.

And yes, when I was sexually assaulted multiple times, abortion was still not what I needed.

I needed to know that I deserved better. I needed to be listened to. I needed to know that I was worthy of love by a man who would not harm me. I needed help to remove myself from a very toxic situation. I needed to understand what a healthy relationship looked like.

By making such amendments Ms Johnson, it seems that you do not understand domestic abuse. By adding this amendment, you are putting an otherwise life changing bill for so many women in jeopardy.

I needed REAL help, not pills in the post.

I, and all the undersigned who stand with me in solidarity, urge you to reconsider making such amendments. To MPs reading this, I plead that you vote against such amendments. Every week, two women are killed by a current or former partner*. Abortion will not help them.

Almost one in three women, aged 16 - 59, will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime**. How does your amendment, in particular for abortions to take place anywhere, care for women in such horrendous situations? Instead, you are ensuring that abused women are even more isolated. You are helping the perpetrators cover their tracks and continue the abusive cycle.

BPAS is not there when women need a safe exit plan. You, Ms Johnson, do not seem to be there when women need a safe exit plan.

Remove this amendment or forever have blood on your hands.

Kind regards,
A Survivor.
