Indiscriminate Pruning of Healthy Trees in Mumbai

We talk of change when there is an election that is about to happen, we talk of women's rights and raise MeToo campaigns, we flood the streets for any scandal but a deaf ear towards our trees.

Indiscriminately pruning our trees has severe repercussions. Without the support of a proper horticulturalist, the contractors appointed by the BMC see it fit to chop any branch, healthy or dead, without any prior thought.

When a tree is not pruned in the right way, it causes the tree to lose it's balance and eventually, falls down.

Our trees have life and is a vital support system to our Earth. All life depends on it's existence.

Today, May 8, 2019, I was able to stop the contractor from indiscriminate pruning of the trees by filling a grievance form that he had handy. The trees around Panch Marg were pruned very recently and they were back to collect big stacks of wood, which required no pruning at all.

Without the support of a certified horticulturalist or an expert on the subject, the uneducated labourers who accompany the contractors are usually given a free hand in 'pruning' the trees how they see fit. Cutting the large branches is NOT pruning.

Imagine a healthy human being having it's hands and legs chopped off, leaving behind only the Torso, Neck and Head.
Could such a body function properly? Would it survive for too long?

Now think of the same thing done to a tree.

From Goregaon to Carter Road, we are seeing a brutal massacre of our trees which usually are not replanted on the streets. We need more green cover in the city, not grey cover.
