We petition the New Westminster Parks Board to immediately add additional water-aerobics classes at Canada Games Pool and ensure they are at appropriate times to meet the needs of seniors and other adults who have been without pool access since March.

·      Before the pandemic, there were deep-water classes every morning Monday to Friday and 3 daytime shallow-water classes per week.  The new schedule includes only one daytime shallow-water class at 9:30 am on Thursday.  The only deep-water aerobics is at 8 am on Saturday morning, when children and their working parents should be using the facilities.

·      We feel that water-aerobics classes for adults have been ignored in the plans to finally re-open the Canada Games Pool on October 7th. We would like to see at least 3 classes per week at a reasonable time during the day.

·      For many adults with limited mobility, chronic health concerns, or post-surgery issues, the pool and water-aerobics is the only feasible exercise and therapy program available.

·      These water-aerobics programs bring in many participants during the slowest time of the day and have contributed to the financial stability of the pool over time.

.   Canada Games Pool is one of the last pools to re-open.  We don’t understand the delay in opening and the restricted schedule since pools have safely re-opened in mid-August in Victoria and in September throughout the Lower Mainland with water-aerobics programs scheduled.  Even Century House in New Westminster, that caters to seniors well into their 80’s and sometimes 90’s, opened for inside fitness classes in September.

·      Canada Games Pool is a large, Olympic size pool with a number of individual change rooms and two fairly-large change areas that could safely accommodate more participants than this very restrictive opening permits.

·      Other pools have safely functioned for weeks and Canada Games senior staff (who were unable to explain the reasons for the limited class schedule) had months to plan and organize a re-opening that allows all age groups to enjoy the benefits of returning to their local pool. Waiting for a new schedule in January means 3 more months without pool access and does not meet the immediate needs of many pool users.

·      In summary, we would like to see a minimum of 3 classes per week at reasonable times starting as soon as possible.
