Install Metal Detectors and Security Checks at Dexter Community Schools
In light of the tragedy at Oxford High School, it’s time for us to take action to protect the safety of our children in Dexter Community Schools.
I am a parent with two children attending the Dexter Schools. The tragedy at Oxford High School is too close to home for comfort. I cannot fathom how the parents of the 4 children who are killed can get through the harrowing aftermath of their children’s deaths. NO PARENT SHOULD BE WORRIED ABOUT SENDING THEIR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL AND WONDER IF THEY WILL MAKE IT HOME ALIVE AT THE END OF A SCHOOL DAY.
The tragedy at Oxford High School demonstrated that lockdown drills and police surveillance are NOT ENOUGH to protect our children from gun violence. Oxford High School has regular lockdown drills and daily police surveillance, and those precautions DID NOT prevent injuries and deaths. The shooter was arrested within 5 minutes, but 5 minutes is long enough to take 4 young lives and injure many others.
5 MINUTES WERE ALL IT TAKES TO KILL 4 CHILDREN.
It doesn’t matter how well trained the teachers and students are in lockdown situations. It doesn’t matter that there was police on site. It doesn’t even matter how remarkably quick the police responded and arrested the shooter: When a weapon successfully makes its way inside the school building, it only takes a few minutes to injure and to kill.
We as a community needs to step up to protect our children. The only way to ensure the safety of our children is to prevent weapons from getting inside any school building. Installing metal detectors and security check at school entrances and exits is the only way to keep our children safe.
We can do better than sending our children to school and helplessly hoping that they will get out alive. We can help our children feel safe by creating a safe environment for them to learn and to thrive. We can prevent unnecessary deaths and senseless violence from happening in our midst.
BE THE RESPONSIBLE ADULTS IN OUR CHILDREN’S LIVES. TAKE ACTION AND SIGN THIS PETITION TO DEXTER COMMUNITY SCHOOLS TO INSTALL METAL DETECTORS AND SECURITY CHECKS AT EVERY DEXTER SCHOOL.
