Stop Councillors' Allowance Increase

Labour councillors at County Hall have proposed a motion that would mean each councillor would receive an increase in their allowance adding up to £100,000 a year. This is a staggering betrayal of people in Devon by Labour. Hospitals across the county are on breaking point by cuts, and our schools see one of the lowest funding per pupil in the country. To have an increase of £100,000 a year to give to councillors while this is going on, is just plain wrong.
Cllr Alan Connett, the Lib Dem group leader, has said: "We should support the recommendations of the panel, but from 2021, not now. We also need to find the money as there is no budget for this, so do we have this money down the back of a sofa?.”
Fundamentally, he is spot on. There is no clear way that we can find this money. It is another example of Labour's magic money tree. However, Young Liberals want to go one step further! We want to oppose this allowance increase until the time that our schools get a significant rise in per pupil funding, and there is no clear and present threat to our vital hospital services.
Perhaps this would be a perfect opportunity for the Conservative administration in County Hall to give our public services the reassurance needed that they are on their side.
